your nest ~ composting 101

Composting is a great way to reduce your overall household waste. You would be amazed at how little trash you have once you have recycled and composted. Studies show that composting can divert 30% of household waste away from the trash and, as a result, the landfill. In addition to helping the environment, you are also aiding in the production of “black gold” for your garden. This “black gold” is a nutrient rich soil that fuels the growth of plants and vegetables. There are many different approaches to composting - everything from a D.I.Y composter to worm composters and tumblers. If you have alot of space, another option is setting up several open crates to rotate your compost through. Keeping a counter-top pail is essential to keep composting on on your radar. Every season, when it is time to plant the garden, we have been able to use the “black gold” in our yard. Nothing feels better then seeing nature come full circle. Click here to access the Charleston County website for information on what you can and cannot compost.

my friend Kay has a pair of composters!

D.I.Y Composter - holes were drilled into a large garbage can for ventilation (organic matter needs oxygen in order to break down)
